Shariff K. Bishal, DO, MS, FAOAO of Associated Orthopedits of Detroit, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine surgery of the shoulder, knee and hip.  Recently he made a public Facebook post about a success story that I think needs to be shared.  We celebrate along with Dr. Bishal and his patient, Katrina Case-Soper on her newfound lease for an active life free of hip pain. Affordable Care Act Brings Higher Costs for Pain Management

The federal government took a dangerous step backwards late last month that will not only cost taxpayers more, it will eventually lead to the broader use of narcotics and other pain medications.

 Under proposed rules related to the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, the federal government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued proposed guidelines earlier this summer. Those proposed guidelines offered some cuts in payments for interventional pain management practices.

Fair enough. The cuts were tough, they were bad policy, but they were bearable.

Facts re: Dr. Oz’s Pain Clinic – Epidural Steroid “Investigative” Report

Dr.Oz badUnder the heading of Dr. Oz’s Pain Clinic, yesterday the Dr. Oz show aired a show covering epidural injections. Dr. Paul Lynch, an interventional pain physician from Arizona, presented the pro side of the epidural injections, while Dr. Jan Friedly, who isgenuinely opposed to epidural injections, presented the con view.
Surprisingly, the show included an investigative report which was both inaccurate and inappropriate with no data to back them up. The only data they had was in reference to the number of epidural injections (approximately 9 million performed in the U.S.), which was based on Dr. Manchikanti’s publication.
